Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Update April 2nd
, 2020
On behalf of Softball Saskatchewan and our Board of Directors, I would like to advise the
membership that Softball Saskatchewan is unfortunately further suspending all sanctioned activities
until Friday May 1st, 2020. This timeframe follows a recent decision by Softball Canada regarding
the suspension of their activities.
For clarity, suspension of softball activities means Softball Saskatchewan will not sanction any
organized activities including practices, player evaluations, games, or tournaments. Other events
include coaching clinics, umpire clinics and player development clinics and camps. By removing
sanctions, we will not cover any of these activities under our liability or personal injury policies until
such time when we resume organized softball. This applies to all member Associations and leagues.
Further, all Travel Permits previously issued for team travel during this timeframe are hereby
cancelled. We will be providing appropriate refunds to families registered for those programs
affected by this decision. In addition, we will make every effort to work with hosts and instructors
re-schedule those clinics and activities that are suspended due to this matter.
We encourage all our member Associations and leagues to continue to make plans in anticipation
that we will still be able to play softball this year. To that end we are moving back our Affiliation
deadline date to June 1st. Any other deadlines that fall within the suspension of activities
timeframes will be moved back to ensure no one misses out on any opportunities. Associations are
encouraged to send in their membership affiliations as they normally would, and we will only invoice
you if in fact we have a softball season in 2020. This will help us all to work through this should we
get back to playing softball this year. We encourage players and parents to be patient and still be
engaged with their local associations and leagues as they work through the impact of COVID-19 in
the hopes that local softball programs will still operate this year. In cooperation with Softball Canada
we are looking into trying to provide coaching clinics and umpire clinics in an online format. As we
get more information on this we will advise. We are trying to make efforts to adapt and be flexible
to assist our members by providing some programs in different formats than normal. However, we
still require proper approvals from a variety of agencies prior to proceeding.
We will continue to evaluate and monitor this situation and provide a further update to the
membership by April 15th at the latest regarding any further suspension of sanctioned
activities.
We want to wish everyone in the entire softball community in Saskatchewan and across Canada a
safe and productive time with family, friends, and co-workers.
Take care and stay safe,
Guy Jacobson
